Stitch Sisters
(since 2019)
The sisters met during their doctoral studies and found themselves entangled in the love of making and wool as a primal material. They developed a collective research practice centring on wool as an historical materiality living in our everyday lives. They are concerned with the global consumption of textiles as an aesthetic pleasure where the wearer has lost contact with the maker and the pleasure of making. Our performance lectures are built around presence of the sheep as an agential part of our lives; we do this through soundscape, story telling and the cloying scent of sheep eminating from the bags of wool split open at the beginning of the performance. As Mali splits open the bags we are reminded of the violent meeting between the blade and the lamb.
Material Touch - Diffracted from wool
(2022)
Our performance lectures involve participation of the audience, sharing stories. We are also in the process of collecting stories from various craftspeople to integrate into our soundscape.
